Our Story

  • Weingut Lennard is Melanie Kneip's oenological wager. German, born and raised in the Hunsrück, a region of high hills in the Rhineland-Palatinate bordered by the Rhine and Moselle, she has a degree in business administration. Previously engaged in the motor sport sector, then with her own tourism agency dedicated to trekking and mountain biking, she is now devoted to the production of wines for which she has always had a great passion.
  • The company, acquired between 2013 and 2014 in Bacharach on the Rhine, owes its name to her son Lennard, who was born shortly after the decision was made to embark on this new adventure. The company's mission is to express the richness and variety of a unique terroir in the world, that of the central part of the Rhine. The wine-making and ageing cellar, already known as the new Hütwohl cellar, dates back to 1898 and is located in the hamlet of Steeg. The building is on three levels and is one of the largest cellars in Bacharach and the entire region.
  • The vineyard covers a total area of five hectares. There are three plots of land just a few hundred metres apart: St. Jost, Wolfshöhle and Lennenborn. The valley is perpendicular to the flow from south to north of the Rhine, in an ideal position and facing south. The average gradient is 60%, with peaks of 70%, not easy working conditions but decisive for the quality of the wines. The soils are characterized by fractions of fine stone and slate flakes from which mineral wines with a strong personality are produced. The indispensable function of heat accumulation during the day is completed by the natural temperature regulator carried out by the Rhine. There are two grape varieties that have been grown here for thousands of years: Riesling and Pinot Noir, here called Spätburgunder.
